April 24, 2017 update: With this week’s AIA Conference on Architecture 2017, we have pushed the regular deadline one last time, to Wednesday, May 3, 2017.

April 4, 2017 update: We are honored to announce our 2017 jurors below.

Architects, designers, and innovators are revolutionizing the way buildings are conceptualized and constructed through technology, research, and ingenuity. To celebrate the state of the art in architecture, ARCHITECT invites you to enter our 11th annual R+D Awards. This longstanding and distinctive program honors advances in architecture at every scale, from novel design and construction solutions to high-performance building systems and details, must-have products and digital tools, and newfound building typologies.

While many competitions focus on the polished end result of design, ARCHITECT’s R+D Awards program prioritizes the process, rigor, and outcome of tackling an architectural problem, an unmet need, or a business opportunity. The program is open to architects, engineers, fabricators, manufacturers, researchers, students, and designers in all building-related disciplines, recognizing the multifaceted skills the come together in the profession. Past projects in the winner’s circle include an app for calculating carbon footprint, a sink finished in recycled rubber, and a prototype for farming crickets.

Start today by registering online and preparing your submissions—all it takes is an abstract (300 words maximum) followed by support materials (20 pages maximum). Keep it simple. Make it compelling. Your entries will be reviewed by a panel of three jurors:

Phil Bernstein, FAIA, lecturer, Yale School of Architecture and former vice president of strategic industry relations, Autodesk
Erin Besler, co-founder, Besler & Sons
Mimi Hoang, AIA, nArchitects

Finalize your submission online by the early bird deadline of April 14, 2017, and pay $175 to register the first entry, and $95 for each subsequent entry. The registration fee for entries submitted by the regular deadline of April 19 April 26 is $225, with each additional entry at $145. We are also excited to offer a reduced registration fee of $95 per entry for full-time faculty members, students, and researchers at academic institutions.

Good luck! We can’t wait to see how you’re changing the future of architecture and design.
