Project Description
Responding to the congregation’s desire to have their church serve as a beacon to the local community, this 11,681-square-foot cube-shaped structure uses a solid base topped with a ‘glass lens’ enclosing the sanctuary below, recalling a lantern. Primary roof structure is provided by Douglas-fir glulam arches which march the length of the church toward the sanctuary, allowing for soaring heights while creating a sense of warmth. The glulam was fabricated just a half mile from the project site; contractors used other locally-sourced wood components to reduce cost and improve environmental efficiency. Natural light streams from the glazed ‘lantern’ above, highlighting the wood structural components throughout the day. The matching tongue and groove ceiling was finished clear to allow the reddish gold of the wood to shine through. The building’s exterior features a brick base clad with cedar siding, chosen for its durability and moisture resistance in exterior applications.
