Project Description

The extensive restoration and expansion of the landmark 28th Street YMCA in Los Angeles brings the valuable neighborhood organization back to its roots as an empowering community center with safe, affordable housing. The new design by Koning Eizenberg Architecture most notably adds a new slim steel-and-wood-framed building that contains additional studio apartments for the facility.

C.R. Laurence collaborated directly with the architecture and design team to identify the most desirable problem-solving solutions for the project. CRL custom-designed and engineered the Series DPS200C Deluxe Perforated Panel System with Aluminum Substructure Framing to create a unique ornamental effect that was inspired by the YMCA’s original 1926 design. CRL also fabricated Vertical Sunshade Systems to help control interior temperatures for the LEED Gold targeted adaptive reuse project.

The 28th Street YMCA project has won numerous awards including the AIA Los Angeles Honor Award, AIA California Council Merit Award, World Architecture Festival Housing Award, Australian Institute of Architecture Award (Finalist), California Preservation Foundation Awards, and the LA Conservancy Preservation Award, to name a few.
