The American Institute of Architects has announced the winners of its 2020 Education Facility Design Awards, recognizing 11 “state-of-the-art designs of schools and learning centers,” according to an AIA press release. This year, AIA selected six projects as awards of excellence, each of which met criteria including enhancing classroom learning; balancing function with aesthetics; establishing a connection with the environment; being respectful of the surrounding community; demonstrating high-level planning in the design process; and integrating sustainability in a holistic fashion. AIA named the remaining five projects as awards of merit, each of which were “recognized for being of superior quality.”

The jury for the 2020 Education Facility Design Awards comprised chair Judith P. Hoskens, Assoc. AIA, of Cuningham Group Architecture in Minneapolis; Malcolm Holzman, FAIA, of Holzman Moss Bottino Architecture in New York; Dina Sorensen, Assoc. AIA, a learning environment project designer and research liaison in Washington, D.C.; Lawrence W. Speck, FAIA, of Page Southerland Page in Austin, Texas; and Amy Yurko, AIA, of BrainSpaces in Chicago.
