Top States and Cities Exposed to Storm Surge Damage

CoreLogic’s 2014 Storm Surge Report estimates the number of single-family homes exposed to storm surge damage as a result of hurricanes, as well as the estimated cost of reconstruction.

Five levels of risk ranging from “extreme” to “low” are defined in the report:

• Extreme (Affected by a Category 1-5 storm)
• Very High (Category 2-5)
• High (Category 3-5)
• Moderate (Category 4-5)
• Low (Category 5)

Our interactive map breaks out a section from CoreLogic’s report, a ranking of states with the highest number of homes potentially affected by storm surge damage, in contrast to their estimated property reconstruction cost. Hovering over each state ranked in the top 20 will show rank, total number of homes potentially affected, and the number of homes considered at “extreme risk.” The cheat sheet below breaks down the reconstruction costs for total properties and extreme risk properties for the top 10.
