Scientific Certification Systems, Emeryville, Calif., has certified Buffalo, N.Y.-based Osmose’s MicroPro technology as an Environmentally Preferable Product. Unlike current copper-based wood preservatives, this system does not use organic solvents to dissolve the copper component. Instead, it uses micronizing technology to grind copper particles so small they can penetrate into the wood in solid form. The process results in an estimated reduction of 20,000 tons (18144 metric tons) of greenhouse-gas emissions each year based on annual production levels.
