Green Depot, the fast-growing Brooklyn, N.Y.-based seller of sustainable building products, announced today it will merge with Chicago’s Greenmaker Supply to create what Green Depot calls “the nation’s largest and most sophisticated supplier of green building materials.”

Green Depot has outlets in Brooklyn, Boston, Philadelphia, Long Island, N.Y., and Newark, N.J., with plans to open new stories in Albany, N.Y., Newark, Del., and in Manhattan’s Bowery neighborhood. Greenmaker has one outlet in Chicago. The two companies have similar backgrounds, similar products, and similar outlooks on green construction.

While the agreement, which took effect Nov. 18, was described as a merger, Greenmaker Supply will in essence become Green Depot’s Midwest outpost. Greenmaker will keep its name, but its Web site eventually will point to Green Depot’s. In addition, Ori Sivan and Joe Silver, Greenmaker’s founders, will become Green Depot’s director of market development and Chicago branch manager, overseeing the Midwest region, respectively.
