The Design Futures Council, an interdisciplinary design and construction network, recently released the results of its 2010 DesignIntelligence Sustainable Design Survey. The report tracks the activities and opinions of the most successful design firms and offers insights from thought-leaders in the architecture/engineering/construction professions about the current status of sustainability and future developments in the field.
As part of the survey, researchers asked top A/E/C professionals about the people, firms, and supplier companies they view as role models in sustainability, and five individuals rose to the top:
- William McDonough, FAIA, founder, William McDonough + Partners, co-author of Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things, and co-founder of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry
- Ed Mazria, AIA, founder, Architecture 2030 and developer of the 2030 Challenge.
- Bob Berkebile, FAIA, principal, BNIM
- Ray Anderson, founder and chairman, Interface
- Amory Lovins, co-founder, chairman, and chief scientist, Rocky Mountain Institute
The survey, published in the July/August edition of DesignIntelligence, also notes five firms that are most celebrated within the profession for their sustainable practices and sensibilities:
In addition, the survey also asks A/E/C professionals which professional organizations they think are best deploying resources to address sustainability issues, their satisfaction with their own firms’ progress toward green design, the percentage of their firms’ work that is environmentally responsible, and how they’ve changed their personal and work habits to reduce their carbon footprint.
