According to reports in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, Amazon has decided to split its highly anticipated secondary headquarters between two East Coast cities—the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington, Va., outside Washington, D.C., and the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, N.Y. According to the New York Times, Amazon already employs more people in these areas than any other location outside its Seattle and Bay Area bases. This news comes more than a year after the tech giant initially announced plans for HQ2.
The two new headquarters will reportedly split the 50,000 promised personnel positions, but it is unclear how Amazon’s original budget of $5 billion in construction and infrastructure will be divided between the locales. Amazon reports that HQ2 “will be a full equal to our current campus in Seattle.”
After announcing its plans last September, Amazon reviewed proposals from 238 cities and later narrowed the list down to other front-runners including Atlanta, Toronto, Philadelphia, and Denver.
Amazon has not officially commented on the news.
