Tesla’s Solar Roof Said to Be Cheaper Than a Traditional Roof

Tesla and SolarCity shareholders voted in favor of a merger last week, meaning the combined company will be producing and selling its solar roof product.

Last month Elon Musk revealed the new solar product he plans for Tesla and SolarCity to create together once the companies are merged, and on Thursday, the shareholders voted in favor of the merger.

The $2 billion deal that will produce the Solar Roof concept Musk debuted has many builders and clean-tech experts on the edge of their seat. However, the main question many still have is in regards to the price – a solar roof couldn’t possibly be financially feasible for the average homeowner, could it?

Musk declares otherwise: “It’s looking quite promising that a solar roof will actually cost less than a normal roof before you even take the value of electricity into account. So the basic proposition would be, ‘Would you like a roof that looks better than a normal roof, lasts twice as long, costs less and by the way generates electricity?’ It’s like, why would you get anything else?”

SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive earlier said the companies are aiming for price the roofs at 40 cents a watt, making it competitive with current market options.
