LED lighting manufacturer Lumileds has introduced a suite of new diodes, as part of its Luxeon Stylist Series that incorporates the company’s FreshFocus technology to help enhance the qualities of produce, meats, fish, breads and pastries. It is a growing trend among lighting manufacturers as they create product options designed specifically for fashion, retail, and hospitality applications where specific color enhancement elevates product displays. “It is the quality of its fresh food—the produce, fresh fish, meat or bread—that sets one market apart from another,” said Luis Aceña, senior manager, Stylist Series at Lumileds. “Our FreshFocus Technology enables market owners to extend their competitive advantage by making these food items appear even more enticing.”

FreshFocus technology uses spectra engineering to hone in on the color points for certain types of foods. As Lumileds explains, “The color points for produce specifically highlights greens, reds, and yellows and is below the blackbody line at a color temperature of 3250K. A below blackbody color point enables a higher color gamut and provides fully saturated color depiction.”

The FreshFocus technology is offered as omnidirectional, spotlight, downlight, and built-to-spec lighting solutions. FreshFocus technology for produce is available on the LUXEON CoB 1208 and 1211 arrays to power downlights and spotlights in the 3300 and 4500 lumen range with 100 lm/W efficacy.

For bread and pastries, the FreshFocus technology is available for certain LUXEON CoBs for spotlights and downlights. At 2700K, the LUXEON CoB 1208 and 1211 arrays achieve >100 lm/W efficacy and produce 3464 and 4750 lumens when driven at 900 and 1200 mA, respectively.

FreshFocus technology for red meat and fish are available in LUXEON CoB 1208 and 1211 arrays, which produce 2,000 and 2,800 lumens when driven at 900 mA and 1200 mA, respectively. FreshFocus Technology for marbled meat is available in the LUXEON 3014 LED, for use in linear fixtures. According to Lumileds, typical return on investment for LEDs with FreshFocus technology is within one year.
