The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has awarded Green Hammer, a green builder in Portland, Ore., its Designing & Building with FSC Award, an honor bestowed upon projects that the certification body feels further responsible forest management through use of FSC wood products.

The 2,600-square-foot single-family custom home was constructed entirely of locally harvested FSC-certified wood, according to an announcement from FSC, except for trim made from salvaged bleacher seats and stair treads crafted from a tree on site. The certified products include framing lumber, countertops, kitchen cabinets, flooring, and trim; knotty and lower-grade material was utilized as accents.

The home, built on an infill site near public transportation, is pending LEED-Platinum certification. Other green features, according to the builder, include:

• Ground-source heat pump

• Native and drought-tolerant landscaping

• Rainwater collection

• Grid-tied photovoltaic system

• Building envelope insulated to 50% above code

• Metal roof

• Energy Star lighting, windows, and appliances

• Bath fans

• Dual-flush toilets

Also recognized in the competition were DiGiacomo Homes & Renovation of Minnetonka, Minn., as an honorable mention in the residential category, and Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park of Woodstock, Vt., as an honorable mention in the commercial/institutional category.

The winners will be honored Nov. 19 during the Greenbuild Expo in Boston.
