After a two-year major remodel, a Los Angeles zero-energy house will serve as a showcase for builders, remodelers, architects, and homeowners interested in learning more about high-performance building principles.

The 2,450-sqare-foot three-bedroom Zenergy House was created by Los Angeles-based consulting, auditing, and training firm Residential Energy Assessment Services as a prototype to educate building pros about greening existing homes. The dwelling combines building science technology with environmentally responsible design and construction.

The major overhaul, which did not change the home’s footprint, included the addition of solar panels to generate power for all of the home’s electrical needs, an ultra-efficient HVAC system and hot water heater, dual-pane, low-E wood windows, low-flow faucets and showerheads, and high-efficiency dual-flush toilets. In addition, the standard lawn irrigation system was replaced with an underground watering system that will conserve 80% on outdoor watering needs.

The grand opening of the Studio City house was held April 2; a number of seminars and tours for architects, builders, designers, and Realtors will be offered at the house through 2010. For more information, click here.
