Sheltering Light

“Lumen,” an installation by Ithaca, N.Y.–based Jenny Sabin Studio, has been selected for the 2017 Young Architects Program, an annual commission to engage summertime visitors at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, N.Y. Opening June 29, the installation will shade the museum’s courtyard with what Sabin calls “knitted light,” a synthetic fabric system she has been developing since 2012. “The project incorporates two types of responsive high-tech yarn,” she says. “One is a photoluminescent yarn which absorbs light or UV and then slowly emits light over time, or essentially glows. The other responsive yarn is a solar active yarn that changes color immediately in the presence of the sun.” MoMA PS1 will be the system’s largest installation to date.
