Lighting Design Community to Gather for IALD Enlighten Americas 2017 Conference

This year’s conference offers an expanded program of pre-conference events and two keynotes.

The International Association of Lighting Designers has announced its lineup for its Enlighten Americas 2017 Conference, which will take place Oct. 12 – 14 at the Grand Hyatt Denver in Denver, Colo. Register at iald.me/enam17co.

The Enlighten conference program features educational seminars by lighting design professionals organized in three concurrent tracks—Art, Science, and Professional Tools.

This year’s conference offers an expanded program of pre-conference events, such as a walking tour of Denver on Wednesday October 11 and hosted by the IALD Rocky Mountain chapter, and a RSVP-required workshop, Measuring Lighting in the Field, led by Craig Bernecker.

Additionally, the program will feature two keynote speakers. The opening keynote will be given by cinematographer Roberto Schaefer, ASC/AIC on Friday October 13. He has worked in TV and film. His film credits include Stranger Than Fiction, The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace, Leaves of Grass, and The Host.

The closing keynote on Saturday October 14 will be presented by electronic artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Known for his interactive installations, he was the first artist to represent Mexico at the 2007 Venice Biennale.

Confirmed speakers for the various seminar sessions include Barbara Horton, Horton Lees Brogden Lighting Design, New York; Andrew Mackinnon, Gabriel Mackinnon Lighting Design, Ottowa, Ontario, Canada; Andreas Schulz, Licht Kunst Licht, Berlin and Bonn, Germany; Nancy Clanton, Clanton and Associates, Boulder, Colo.; Ted Mather, Available Light, New York, and Randy Burkett, Randy Burkett Lighting Design, St. Louis.

Elizabeth Donoff is Editor-at-Large of Architectural Lighting (AL). She served as Editor-in-Chief from 2006 to 2017. In 2017, Architectural Lighting was a Top Ten Finalist for Magazine of the Year from the American Society of Business Publication Editors' AZBEE Awards. In 2016, Donoff received the Jesse H. Neal Award for her Editor’s Comments in the category of Best Commentary/Blog, and in 2015, AL received a Jesse H. Neal Award for Best Media Brand (Overall Editorial Excellence).Prior to her entry into design journalism, Donoff worked in New York City architectural offices including FXFowle where she was part of the project teams for the Reuters Building at Three Times Square and the New York Times Headquarters. She is a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Me., and she earned her Master of Architecture degree from the School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis.
