Lighting designer Leni Schwendinger has joined Arup as an associate principal and will lead the firm’s urban lighting design initiatives. Schwendinger’s work over the past 20 years has focused on illumination for architectural and public spaces in urban settings with a particular emphasis on nightscapes. Her diverse portfolio includes the lighting installation “Dreaming in Color,” at the Seattle Center’s McCaw Hall opera house and theater; the Triple Bridge Gateway project at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan; “Chroma Streams: Tide and Traffic” project on the Kingston Bridge, Glasgow, Scotland; and an interactive illumination scheme for the revitalized Coney Island Parachute Jump in Brooklyn, New York. “Arup is thrilled that Leni has joined the firm to lead its global urban lighting efforts,” said Brian Stacy, principal and Arup Americas lighting leader. “Through her vast network and years of experience, she will broaden Arup’s capabilities to include landscape, infrastructure, and atmospheres for both day and nighttime environments, worldwide.” Schwendinger was featured as Architectural Lighting’s One-on-One interview in the June 2012 issue.
