The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) has announced that after 26 years of service, William Hanley, known as Bill to colleagues, has retired effective Dec. 31, 2014. Hanley first joined the IES in 1988 and served as the organization’s head-of-staff for the longest amount of time in the association’s 109-year history.

Through his executive leadership Hanley steered the association through financially difficult times, leaving it positioned on “solid financial footing” and having experienced overall “growth.” He was instrumental in the launch of Lightfair, the IES’s management of the Street and Area Lighting Conference, as well as the publication of the three most recent editions (8th through 10th) of the IES Lighting Handbook.

“I feel honored to have served the IES for as long as I have,” Hanley said. “While turning the organization around financially was a satisfying accomplishment, the most rewarding part of the job was developing relationships with the people I worked with. I’d like to thank the IES Presidents, past and present, and the IES Board for their support, the IES staff, many of whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with more than two decades, and the IES members, sponsors, and committee volunteers who have supported the IES through their dues, financial support, and valuable time and talent donated to the organization. I’m deeply grateful for all their help in making the IES what it is today. Most importantly, I want to thank my wife, Irene, who has been steadfast in her support.”

Current IES President Paul Mercier noted, “[Bill’s] competency, sound advice and warm demeanor were hallmarks of his term; a term that was marked with increasing recognition for an organization that has accomplished great things for more than 100 years. I wish Bill many happy and healthy years of relaxation with his wife and family.”

A search to fill the executive vice president position is underway and is being conducted by the IES Board of Directors.
