IES Appoints New Director of Education

Tom Butters is appointed as the Society’s new Director of Education.

The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) has announced the appointment of Tom Butters as Director of Education, effective Aug. 1, 2016. This is a new position for the Society that was “…established to address the growing need for timely, accessible, and objective continuing education courses in the lighting industry and the expanding role of education within IES for the benefit of its members.” In his new role, Butters will oversee the IES’s educational programs. He will report to Executive Vice President Tim Licitra and also work with the Directors of Standards and Membership Services.

Butters joins the IES staff after having served as the Director/Sr. Manager of Canlyte’s Lighting Concept Centre/Philips Lighting University since 2007. Butters brings more than 30 years’ experience in the lighting industry to this new position. He has served as a Board Director, President, and Education Chair of the Toronto Section of the IES. He was also Vice District Chair of the IES District for Eastern Canada.

“The hire of Tom to fill the newly created position of Director of Education is an important next step in the evolution of IES,” said Tim Licitra, IES Executive Vice President in a prepared statement. “Our vision includes increasing the value of membership by providing our members with access to educational content delivered through modern technologies, supporting our sections by assisting in establishing educational programming, and the creation of resources to aid colleges/universities and our strategic partners. Tom will be instrumental in making this vision a reality.”

Butters noted in a press statement, “I look forward to working with the strong team Tim Licitra is putting together, with the membership of the IES and other educational avenues in delivering quality, timely lighting education to all segments of our industry and specifically our membership.”

In 2017, Architectural Lighting was a Top Ten Finalist for Magazine of the Year from the American Society of Business Publication Editors' AZBEE Awards. In 2016, Donoff received the Jesse H. Neal Award for her Editor’s Comments in the category of Best Commentary/Blog, and in 2015, AL received a Jesse H. Neal Award for Best Media Brand (Overall Editorial Excellence).Prior to her entry into design journalism, Donoff worked in New York City architectural offices including FXFowle where she was part of the project teams for the Reuters Building at Three Times Square and the New York Times Headquarters. She is a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Me., and she earned her Master of Architecture degree from the School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis.
