The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) has named three new members to its College of Fellows; lighting designers Claude R. Engle, III; Dawn Hollingsworth; and Kaoru Mende. The announcement was made during the Association’s annual IALD Enlighten Americas conference held Oct. 16-18, 2014, in San Diego, Calif.
This award of distinction is given to those members of the IALD “for [their] valuable contribution to the art and science of lighting design, and for their continued service to the IALD.” Fellows must be a professional member of the IALD and have a minimum of ten years of experience. Each of this year’s fellows has made significant contributions to the practice of lighting design.
Claude R. Engle, III, was first inspired by theatrical lighting. After graduating from Princeton University’s Engineering School in 1960, Engle worked as a theatrical and television lighting designer in New York City, first at Century Lighting and later in the United States Army Signal Corps at the Army Pictorial Center. He relocated to Washington, D.C., in 1963, and opened his own practice dedicated to lighting design Claude R. Engle Lighting Consultancy in 1968. He is a licensed professional engineer in the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, and Illinois.
Over the course of his 50-plus year career, Engle has received a number of lighting industry awards including the Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation and the IALD International Lighting Design Award of Excellence in Lighting Design. A founding and charter member of the IALD, Engle is also a past chairman of the Capital Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society.
Dawn Hollingsworth also has roots in the field of theatrical lighting design. She started her lighting career in the mid-1980s as a partner at Pacific Illumination in Long Beach, Calif., and went on to work for a number of firms where she held management positions. She is presently Lighting Group Manager and Principal Lighting Designer at Stantec.
Her commitment to lighting education is a passion. A past IALD Trust President and Treasurer, Hollingsworth has served as an IALD Education Trust Ambassador to several university programs. She has also taught both architectural and theatrical lighting design at a number of schools including the University of Southern California, the Woodbury University, and the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
Her many contributions to the IALD include serving on the boards of the IALD and the IALD Education Trust, as well as the IALD Membership Committee, the IALD Task Force to explore diversification of revenue, Board Liaison to the IALD Education Trust, and the IALD Finance Committee.
Kaoru Mende has been practicing lighting design for more than 35 years. After graduating from the Tokyo University of Art, he started working for the lighting design firm T.L. Yamagiwa Laboratory in 1978. In 1990, he opened his own office, Lighting Planners Associates, which has expanded into a practice with three offices (Tokyo, Singapore, and Hong Kong) and a global project portfolio.
Mende’s work surveys a diverse project typology, from residential lighting to urban lighting design. He has received a number of lighting industry awards including the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Award of Distinction, the President’s Design Award in Singapore, and several IALD awards, including Awards of Merit, Awards of Excellence, and the IALD International Lighting Design Radiance Award for Excellence in Lighting Design, the Association’s highest honor.
An active member in the lighting community, Mende has been a professional member of the IALD since 2001 and he presently serves on the IALD Board of Directors. In 2009, he co-founded IALD Japan and has been a key figure in promoting the Association’s activities in Asia.
