The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) announced its newest members to be inducted into the IALD College of Fellows during its annual Enlighten Americas Conference, which took place Oct. 13 to 15 in Puerto Vallarta, MĂ©xico. The two individuals are Nancy Clanton, founder and president of Boulder, Colo., based lighting design firm Clanton and Associates, and Ken Douglas, principal and co-founder of Bloomfield, N.J.-based lighting design firm Illumination Art.
This award of distinction is given to those members of the IALD “for [their] valuable contribution to the art and science of lighting design, and for their continued service to the IALD.” Fellows must be a professional member of the IALD and have a minimum of ten years of experience.
Nancy Clanton
Clanton’s firm, Clanton and Associates, specializes in sustainable and regenerative design. A graduate of the University of Colorado, she studied architectural engineering as well as theatrical lighting design. Clanton has been an active member of the IALD serving on the Board of Directors in leadership areas as the Director of Marketing and External Affairs, the Director of Marketing and Communication, and the Director of Finance. Clanton is passionate about teaching and has presented at a number of industry conferences such as Lightfair, Greenbuild, CleanTech, and the C-forty symposium. Throughout her career she has focused much of her work on daylighting, quality of light, and the preservation of the night sky environment serving on a number of committees “…involved in creating the standards of both LEED and IES to support quality design principles.” She served as chair of the Model Lighting Ordinance Task Force and was instrumental in co-authoring the Model Lighting Ordinance, which was developed between 2004 – 2011.
Clanton is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Colorado and Oregon, and is a member of the National Academy of Science’s committee on the assessment of solid-state lighting. She is also a member of the Low Vision Design Committee, which received the 2016 National Institute of Building Sciences Honor Award for the development of the “Design Guidelines for the Visual Environment.” In 2014, Clanton received the ACEC Colorado Outstanding Woman Engineer Award and the International CleanDesign Award. A LEED Fellow as well as a Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society, Clanton served as lighting group leader for the Greening of the White House, and has twice been awarded the IES Presidential Award.

Ken Douglas
Douglas, principal and co-founder of Illumination Arts, combines a background in theatrical lighting design with more than 25 years of experience in architectural lighting design. With, firm co-founder Faith Baum, the duo “…have developed a reputation as the industry leader in the design of lighting solutions for signature bridges and large scale monumental structures…”. Douglas has worked on a wide-range of award-winning projects including The Biloxi Bay Bridge, a new structure to replace an original bridge destroyed during Hurricane Katrina; the restoration and expansion of the Central Park Police Station in New York City, which received the Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award from the Central Park Conservancy; the Irving Convention Center in Texas; Ann Taylor’s Fifth Avenue Flagship Store in New York City; and the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C.
An active member of the IALD, Douglas served as chair of the association’s IALD International Lighting Design Awards for four years. He has also served on the IALD Board, first as a Director-at-Large and then as Treasurer, as well as a number of other task forces and committees for the association.
Douglas and the firm’s work have been published in a number of publications including Architectural Lighting, Architectural Record, and LD+A, and honored with several lighting design awards from the IALD and the Illuminating Engineering Society.
