On December 16, the International Association of Lighting Designers announced in its newsletter “Reflections” that Ernest Wotton, one of the founding members of the IALD died at his home in Toronto on Nov. 14, 2016.
Wotton was born in London, England on April 16, 1921, and had an esteemed career as a lighting designer, university lecturer, and writer. He was the recipient of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s 2011 Gold Medal for his “achievements in furthering the profession, art, and knowledge of illuminating engineering.” Wotton also was the recipient of the United Kingdom’s Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers highest medal for his “services to lighting.” Further, Wotton was the first recipient of the 2011 President’s Medal of the U.K.-based Society of Lighting and Lighting in recognition of his “significant and lifetime contributions to lighting.” Donations may be made in his name to the Anglican Foundation of Canada.
