The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) has announced its lineup for its annual Enlighten Americas Conference, which will take place Oct. 11 – 13, 2018, at the Motif hotel in Seattle. Register at iald.me/seattle18reg. Regular registration ends on Sep 30, 2018; late registration starts on Oct. 1, 2018.

The IALD Enlighten conference program features educational seminars by lighting design professionals organized into three concurrent tracks—Art, Science, and Professional Tools. The seminar lineup includes several talks on various aspects of advances in color technology, issues associated with working in different parts of the world, and recent project case studies.

Of particular interest in this year’s conference agenda are the seminars in the “Professional” track that focus on topics that reflect critical practice issues of today, such as the challenges of being a small business owner, the role of contract development, and how to sustain the dynamics of firm growth and development. One seminar of particular note is: “Why Mothers Leave Design (And How to Keep Them),” presented by Emily Klingensmith of Schuler Shook in Chicago and Lisa Reed of Envision Lighting Design, in Lake St. Louis, Mo. This seminar continues the “Women in Lighting” discussions fist started during Enlighten 2015 in San Diego.

The pre-conference lineup includes the annual Business Owner’s Forum, as well as a series of workshops focusing on interconnectivity, photography as a lighting tool, and the WELL Building standard. RSVP and additional fees are required.

There will also be a Seattle architecture walking tour on Wednesday evening Oct. 10 from 4:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Organized by the IALD Pacific Northwest Chapter, the tour will include famous Seattle locations such as Pike Place Market, the Seattle Public Library, and the Seattle Art Museum. For more details, see the event calendar page.

Another signature aspect of the Enlighten Conference is the focus on students and emerging designers. In addition to all the networking activities, there is a dedicated student-only workshop, “Metamerism–A Colorful Workshop,” will be led by lighting designers Christopher Knowlton and Tad Trylski, both of whom are based in the United Kingdom. The workshop “…offers an opportunity for students to explore color and the interaction between light and material.”

The closing keynote speaker has yet to be announced.
