Charles Cameron to Lead New NYSID Lighting Program

Recognizing the need for professional training and education in interior design curricula, New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) is launching a Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Interior Lighting Design beginning June 2011. Applicants must already hold a professional degree in architecture, engineering, interior design, or a related design discipline. NYSID has enlisted lighting designer Charles Cameron to serve as the Lighting Area Coordinator for this one-year practice-based program geared toward the schedule of working professionals. With a focus on illumination for interior environments, courses will be held at night and on weekends, and the 30-credit degree will cover a range of topics including the history and theory of lighting design; sustainability principles; integrated systems design; as well as financial analysis, code compliance and project maintenance. The program will be located at NYSID’s new Graduate Center at 401 Park Ave. South.

“I am honored and excited to be joining President Cyphers, Dean Ageloff and the other area coordinators in the ongoing development of the New York School of Interior Design,” Cameron states. “I am particularly proud of the development of the MPS in Interior Lighting Design program that we will be rolling out in the coming year. This program is timely due to the growing importance of high quality and energy efficient lighting in our current practice of designing spaces for people.”

Cameron has been practicing and teaching architectural lighting design for more than a decade. Prior to starting his own firm-Studio C Squared-he held partner and principal designer positions at Meeker Cameron Lighting Design Group and the Luce Group. He has served as an instructor at the NYSID for the past three years and has also been a visiting lecturer at the New York School of Visual Arts and Drew University in Madison, N.J. Cameron received a Master of Fine Arts in theatrical lighting design from New York University and a Bachelor of Arts in theater arts from Drew University. He is presently serving as the 2010-2011 Vice President of the New York City Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society.

Elizabeth Donoff is Editor-at-Large of Architectural Lighting (AL). She served as Editor-in-Chief from 2006 to 2017. Over the past 11 years, under her editorial direction, Architectural Lighting has received a number of prestigious B2B journalism awards. In 2017, Architectural Lighting was a Top Ten Finalist for Magazine of the Year from the American Society of Business Publication Editors' AZBEE Awards. In 2016, Donoff received the Jesse H. Neal Award for her Editor’s Comments in the category of Best Commentary/Blog, and in 2015, AL received a Jesse H. Neal Award for Best Media Brand (Overall Editorial Excellence).Prior to her entry into design journalism, Donoff worked in New York City architectural offices including FXFowle where she was part of the project teams for the Reuters Building at Three Times Square and the New York Times Headquarters. She is a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Me., and she earned her Master of Architecture degree from the School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis.
