7th Velux Daylight Symposium Call for Papers

The 7th Velux Daylight Symposium will take place May 3 – 4, 2017 in Berlin at the Café Moskau. The symposium theme is “Healthy & Climate Friendly Architecture.” Paper abstracts of 500 words should be submitted by email to: thedaylightsite@velux.com no later than Nov. 30, 2016.

Call for papers – Papers are called for within, but not limited to, the following categories:

  • Light and human health; how does light/daylight affect human health and wellbeing, considering physical, biological and psychological effects?
  • Architecture for the senses; how can we design buildings that stimulate our senses, follow our human needs and allow us to live in balance with nature?
  • Daylight as a means to rethinking the way we design buildings and urban environments.
  • Living environments; how can daylight impact the way homes are built and renovated, supporting recreational and social activities, recuperation, health and wellbeing?
  • Working environments; how can daylight impact the way offices and public buildings are built or renovated, supporting productivity, performance, satisfaction, health and wellbeing?
  • Learning environments; how can daylight impact the way schools are built or renovated, supporting learning capabilities, social interaction, health and wellbeing?
  • Socioeconomic aspects related to improving daylighting conditions in homes, schools, healthcare and/or offices?
  • Building legislation; what are the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities associated with daylight in building legislation?
  • Sustainability; how can we use daylight to create buildings that have a low impact on the environment, while also providing a high quality of life for the occupants?


The Scientific Daylight Symposium Committee will review proposals, and submitters will be notified regarding the status of their submission.

The VELUX Daylight Symposiums gather “participants from research, architectural and engineering practices, as well as legislation and lighting design, from all over the world.” Registration information for the 2017 symposium as well as the VELUX Daylight Academic Forum 2017 to be held on May 2 and open to PhD students working in daylight research, can be found at the symposium site: http://www.conferencemanager.dk/VELUXdaylight2017

About the Author

Elizabeth Donoff

Elizabeth Donoff is Editor-at-Large of Architectural Lighting (AL). She served as Editor-in-Chief from 2006 to 2017. She joined the editorial team in 2003 and is a leading voice in the lighting community speaking at industry events such as Lightfair and the International Association of Lighting Designers Annual Enlighten Conference, and has twice served as a judge for the Illuminating Engineering Society New York City Section’s (IESNYC) Lumen Award program. In 2009, she received the Brilliance Award from the IESNYC for dedicated service and contribution to the New York City lighting community. Over the past 11 years, under her editorial direction, Architectural Lighting has received a number of prestigious B2B journalism awards. In 2017, Architectural Lighting was a Top Ten Finalist for Magazine of the Year from the American Society of Business Publication Editors' AZBEE Awards. In 2016, Donoff received the Jesse H. Neal Award for her Editor’s Comments in the category of Best Commentary/Blog, and in 2015, AL received a Jesse H. Neal Award for Best Media Brand (Overall Editorial Excellence).Prior to her entry into design journalism, Donoff worked in New York City architectural offices including FXFowle where she was part of the project teams for the Reuters Building at Three Times Square and the New York Times Headquarters. She is a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Me., and she earned her Master of Architecture degree from the School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis.
