Twenty-seven projects were honored at the Los Angeles Section’s Awards Gala on June 24.

The Illuminating Engineering Society Los Angeles Section (IESLA) presented the 2017 Lumen West Awards at its 20th annual awards dinner held on June 24, 2017, at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

The event drew a record-breaking attendance of more than 400 guests from the design and manufacturing sectors of the lighting industry. Awards were presented in two categories: The Lumen Award of Excellence, the highest level of recognition for permanent architectural application, and the Lumen Award of Merit, in recognition for a meritorious permanent architectural application.

Overall, the jury selected 27 projects to receive awards from an entry pool of more than 66 submissions from Los Angeles Section members. (The Orange County Section received 32 entries. To see the list of those winners, click here.) Six projects received an Award of Excellence, and 21 projects were given Awards of Merit. The complete list of project winners is as follows:

The following people served as the 2017 Lumen West Award co-chairs: Sylvie Tabori of Current Light and Vice President / Incoming President of IESLA, and Kristine Paterno of Patrick Quigley & Associates.

The 2017 Lumen West jury included Heith Rogers, Google; Terry Charron, Current Light; Ken Downing, Luceplan; Meghan Howell, eSquared Lighting Design; Michael Schrupp, EXP; Dave Young, ETC; Cy Eaton, Lumenetix; and Mindy Iannello, Performance Lighting Systems and Orange Country IES President, and IES District 5 Chairperson. Ms. Iannello, along with David Komonosky, Principal, Performance Lighting Systems in Orange County, Calif. managed the judging process for the local section awards jury.

In addition to the project awards the Section also presented its service awards. The following members were recognized for their contributions:

About the Author

Elizabeth Donoff

Elizabeth Donoff is Editor-at-Large of Architectural Lighting (AL). She served as Editor-in-Chief from 2006 to 2017. She joined the editorial team in 2003 and is a leading voice in the lighting community speaking at industry events such as Lightfair and the International Association of Lighting Designers Annual Enlighten Conference, and has twice served as a judge for the Illuminating Engineering Society New York City Section’s (IESNYC) Lumen Award program. In 2009, she received the Brilliance Award from the IESNYC for dedicated service and contribution to the New York City lighting community. Over the past 11 years, under her editorial direction, Architectural Lighting has received a number of prestigious B2B journalism awards. In 2017, Architectural Lighting was a Top Ten Finalist for Magazine of the Year from the American Society of Business Publication Editors' AZBEE Awards. In 2016, Donoff received the Jesse H. Neal Award for her Editor’s Comments in the category of Best Commentary/Blog, and in 2015, AL received a Jesse H. Neal Award for Best Media Brand (Overall Editorial Excellence).Prior to her entry into design journalism, Donoff worked in New York City architectural offices including FXFowle where she was part of the project teams for the Reuters Building at Three Times Square and the New York Times Headquarters. She is a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Me., and she earned her Master of Architecture degree from the School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis.
