Part of building a home is understanding the green requirements where it’s being built. The Greenbuild KB Home ProjeKt was not only about where it was being built, but when. This project was engineered to meet the requirement of California’s net zero 2020 proposal.

Steve Ruffner, president, Southern California for KB Home, talks about the company’s commitment to smart, sustainable homes and how it is preparing for the future. The staff at KB wants to continue to deliver homes that make their home buyers feel good, both emotionally and physically. For Ruffner, that means having a proactive approach.

KB Home could be reactive in 2020, when the code is implemented, but Ruffner says that would not bring the value the company wants to create for its home buyers. For KB Home, it’s about starting now, experimenting and experiencing, much as they did with the Greenbuild KB Home ProjeKt. With the experience from this project, KB Home will be able to produce a high-quality, high-value product in 2020.

KB Home’s collaborative approach to the project is a more effective way to produce best solutions. Other industry leaders are leveraging the collaborative method, much like the groups involved in developing these eight futuristic green products that will be a strategic part of building sustainable homes in upcoming years.
