Holiday season is at its peak, and Christmas decorations are everywhere. While Christmas lights may amplify the charm of the holidays, there’s a good chance that those twinkling lights have a big impact at the end of the month when the billing cycle comes to a close.

One sure way to cut down the cost of decorations during holiday season is to replace old incandescent light bulbs on your Christmas tree with modern LED lighting.

The light-emitting diode (LED) is one of today’s most energy-efficient and rapidly-developing lighting technologies, according to the Department of Energy. Quality LED light bulbs have a longer shelf life, offer better quality light, and cost much less money than traditional light. Residential LEDs (especially ENERGY STAR-rated ones) consume at least 75% less energy, and last 25 times longer than traditional incandescent lights.

LEDs also account for hefty energy savings nationwide. The Department of Energy (DOE) said in a release that widespread use of LEDs can save about 348 TWh of electricity, an equivalent of annual electrical output of 44 large electric power plants, achieving a total savings of more than $30 billion by the year of 2027.

Statista, a statistics research company, has created an infographic using official data from the DOE to showcase the difference that LED lights can make in terms of energy savings. It turns out that LED C-9 lights, which costs less than 30 cents for 480 hours of lighting, can save more than $100 on energy bills in the long run, compared to traditional incandescent C-9 lights.
