International firm HOK has unveiled a new virtual reality (VR) application for iOS and Android devices that will allow users to experience panoramic, 360-degree renderings in two different viewing modes. Using built-in gyroscopes on smartphones, a device used for measuring or maintaining orientation, the application’s “Pan Mode” allows users to navigate in a space by simply moving their devices. The “VR Mode” allows users to explore the renderings through a VR viewer, such as Google Cardboard.

Dubbed HOK VR, the application’s current version only allows users to explore two recent HOK projects, but according to a news release, an updated version will be launched this spring and will allow users to upload their own project renderings and descriptions into the application. This will also enable clients to access the renderings through HOK VR by simply entering an access code.
“We wanted to create a simple way to get our clients more engaged that didn’t require them to come into the office,” said HOK director of design technology James Vandezande, AIA, in a news release. “This brings VR to them and allows them to experience a design t their leisure.”
HOK VR makes it easier for stakeholders to participate in a design process, and have a better understanding of what a space will look like upon the completion of a project.
