In the last 24 years, the international Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology, BREEAM, has been hard at work certifying buildings. It has completed more than 542,868 certifications and has more than 2.2 million registered buildings in 77 countries. Now BREEAM is entering the U.S. market, setting its sights on its U.S. competitor U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED, which has completed just 80,000 certifications.
Barry Giles, CEO of BuildingWise, which is partnering to bring BREEAM to the U.S., suggested LEED’s program is too cumbersome and expensive for building owners and investors to take part in, while BREEAM In-Use makes it easier for users to track their performance.
Scot Horst, USGBC chief product officer, indicated that BREEAM might be easier for people to use, but it doesn’t give proper results on a building’s true performance.
