Concrete pulls serious weight in the built environment, yet often that contribution is hidden away in building cores, floor plates, and foundations. These five projects, named by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) this week for their innovative application of the common building material, bring concrete into the spotlight with latticed veils, sculptural flare walls, and seismically attuned spans.

To be eligible for inclusion in the competition, projects had to be recognized at the ACI chapter level and submitted to the national ACI by that chapter, or be chosen by one of the institute’s international partners. Entries were recognized by project type—low-rise, high-rise, infrastructure, decorative, and repair and restoration—and reviewed by an independent industry panel. Judging criteria included architectural and engineering merit, innovative use of material, resilience, and functionality.
