THE FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL-US , Washington, D.C., awarded its third annual Designing & Building with FSC Award to the Baraboo, Wis.-based Aldo Leopold Foundation for the Aldo Leopold Legacy Center headquarters building. The award recognizes building projects that have furthered responsible forest management through their use of FSC-certified wood products. Completed in 2007, ALLC is a 12,000-square-foot (1115-m2 ) administrative and program headquarters building located 1 mile (1.6 km) from the famous Leopold Shack. Approximately 78 percent of the wood used in the building is FSC certified and 92 percent of that was site harvested and locally processed. Wood was implemented in structural and nonstructural uses. Site-milled columns and beams created the majority of the interior skeleton. Non-structural uses include siding, ceiling decking, porch decking, flooring, baseboards, window frames, doors, chairs, tables, bookshelves, counters and cabinets. In addition, ALLC is a LEED Platinum-certified, carbon-neutral facility. (To read more about this project, see eco-structure’s May/June 2007 issue, page 42.) Dovetail Partners Inc., Minneapolis, earned this year’s honorable mention for the Aitkin House. About 67 percent of the 1,300-square-foot (121-m2 ) home’s wood products are FSC certified.
