By far, the easiest, lowest-cost way to implement biophilic design is to add plants to a space. In addition to enhancing the aesthetic of interiors, research shows that the presence of plant life improves psychological well-being. Most importantly, plants naturally purify the air, which is particularly advantageous for commuters and residents in dense cities. Here are seven plants that can add to a home for a dash of spring cleaning.
1. Dendrobium and Phaeleonopsis Orchids: Orchids require very little attention and respire (giving off oxygen) at night. They also absorb xylene, a pollutant often found in paints and glues, making them ideal for newly constructed or renovated homes.
2. Ferns: Ferns are low-maintenance plants that work to rid the air of toulene and xylene, which are commonly found in paints.
3. Philodendrons: Another plant that’s easy to care for, philodendrons also rid air of xylene.
4. Peace Lilies: With the ability to thrive in temperatures below 55 degrees, peace lilies are yet another plant that’s easily cared for. They rid air of several toxins including benzene, ammonia, formaldehyde, acetone, and xylene among others. This makes them ideal for somewhere in the home near where cleaning products are kept.
5. Massangeana Cane: this larger plant is native to Africa and removes formaldehyde from the air.
6. Anthuriums: these plants are among the most colorful of the bunch and purify air of toluene, ammonia, and formaldehyde which make them ideal for office placement near a printer, copy room or adhesives.
7. Pothos: a very common plant in North America, Pothos rid the air of carbon monoxide and formaldehyde and require very little light to survive.
