Project Description

Founded in 1782 under the patronage of George Washington, Washington College is among the nation’s leading liberal arts institutions. Located on over 100 acres in the heart of Chestertown, Maryland, the character and history of the Chesapeake region define and inform the campus experience.

Even as the College developed its facilities across the campus, it lacked a landscape master plan and detailed precinct plans for several specific areas on the campus.

In collaboration with faculty, staff and administration, the Landscape Architecture studio at Hord Coplan Macht has worked to define and enhance those emotional connections, while responding to the needs of the modern campus and today’s student. Following development of a comprehensive landscape master plan and site development guidelines, Hord Coplan Macht continues its collaborative effort with the College through design of many important campus spaces including Reid Hall, Hodson Commons including a new Student Center, Dining Commons and adjacent residence halls, the north campus residential neighborhood including the Western Shore Residence Halls and the planting design for Sassafras and Chester Residence Halls.
