FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
Johns Hopkins University has constructed a 105,000 GSF multidisciplinary active learning and research laboratory facility for Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience and Biophysics departments as an addition to the existing Mudd Building for biology research on the Homewood Campus. The addition is a simple and highly efficient, double-loaded corridor bar building, which inflects in response to the curved topographic contours of the wooded hillside descending towards the northern façade. Enclosing the fourth side of the existing Mudd Building, the design creates a new Natural Sciences commons on the rooftop of an existing lecture hall conceived as a rotated square figure in the central courtyard. The laboratories line the new northern façade of the complex and are fully glazed from floor to ceiling to provide views to the wooded knoll, bring daylight into the workspace and encourage engagement with the broader campus community.
