Project Description

Chronic homelessness often stems from mental illness, addiction, and unsafe living conditions. Sister Peg Spindler, Executive Director of Sojourner Truth House, has dreamed of creating a sanctuary for the at-risk and homeless in the Gary, Indiana community for fifteen years.

Village of Hope provides a safe-haven to single mothers and families who may be homeless, have a mental illness or substance abuse issue. Eligible residents are welcome for as long as they need, and some may become permanent residents. Each unit has its own identity and includes a small balcony overlooking a courtyard – providing residents with a small area of outdoor space to call their own. The courtyard itself is sheltered by the L-shaped building so that residents feel secure in all parts of the complex. In addition, community partners provide trustworthy education and training resources for residents that develop skills to lead independent, fulfilled lives.

HED’s design, in collaboration with Sojourner Truth House and TWG Development, captures an image of home. The realization of this elegant three-story, 40-unit permanent supportive housing development, provides a safe environment for chronically homeless individuals and families in Lake County, Indiana. Village of Hope is not only supportive, affordable housing, it is a home that empowers residents to lead life with dignity.
