Project Description
The University of Memphis School of Law relocated to the historic former Customs House and Federal Post Office overlooking the Mississippi River in downtown Memphis.
Program Statement:
The design and restoration preserved the building's historic environment, modernized its systems, and adapted it for its new educational mission. Located in downtown Memphis near the courthouses and the offices of lawyers and judges, the new School offers students opportunities for involvement in the local legal scene.
The project is a perfect example of adaptive reuse; the renovation has given new life to an under-utilized building while enhancing its architectural character and preserving its historic significance.
A major design challenge was how to incorporate all new mechanical, plumbing and electrical upgrades as well as seismically retrofit the structure while still maintaining the historic character of the site.
The renovation design has paid off for the University and the City, increasing student applications and bringing vital activity to this area with over 400 students and staff.
