Project Description

The Twister is a nine-unit, three story apartment building. Modest sized units feel grand thanks to efficient floor plans, double height spaces and neutral finishes. The long bar connected to a short bar with transparent circulation core parti cleverly allows each apartment to have multiple exposures. Top units have double height spaces and private outdoor terraces. By lifting the building a half story above street grade and providing thick masonry walls with deep window sills, a feeling of privacy is maintained despite large expanses of glass. The context of the site is varied; brick garden apartments border historic Victorian row homes. The building’s white façade with primary colored panels are reminiscent of the classic children’s game which inspired the nickname “Twister” by local residents. The building’s modern aesthetic also adds a “twist” to its historic district context, successfully encouraging community discussion and architectural diversity in a once conservative city.
