Project Description

The Madsen Residence is a house transformed many times over its century-long life. Before the Madsen’s acquisition it had been enlarged, reduced, re-located, and reformed, sometimes by desire and sometimes by necessity, when portions had settled dangerously into the uncertain soil beside the bay. The family and their designers faced the formidable task of rebuilding the extensively damaged areas, selectively restoring, and judiciously expanding, so as to preserve a sense of organic unity throughout. The goal was to retain a local heritage, while moving into a new era. We believe we have achieved that goal by carrying on the tradition, never seeking to masquerade as either a historic restoration or as a brand new entity. Greatly enhanced in size, comfortability, and easy elegance, the attractive appearance of continuous organic growth has been preserved.
