Project Description

FROM THE AIA INDIANA:

Virginia Avenue connects the bustling Fountain Square Cultural District to the energy of Downtown. The Hinge serves as the pivot point between these two dynamic neighborhoods. It reflects the new spirit of Fletcher Place as a gateway to the progressive community of artists, writers, designers and entrepreneurs that are revitalizing the nearsoutheast side of Indianapolis.

Simple contemporary forms are articulated to express the
playful culture of the neighborhood. The palette of color and materials is decidedly urban, and movement is expressed in the playful patterning of brick masonry as the building meets the street and Indianapolis Cultural TrailThe dynamic pattern in the brick mimics the flow of traffic on the cultural trail between Fountain Square and fowntown Indianapolis. The aesthetic is a balance of urban fortitude and the lightness and transience of contemporary life. The Hinge is an 85,178 square foot mixeduse, multifamily and commercial project.

It contains 56 market rate apartments, 12,000 square feet of commercial space, and a 57 space enclosed parking garage. The project also incorporates a 4,200 square foot green roof terrace. Hinge features wood over podium construction, with a steel and precast concrete ground floor level and woodframed upper levels.

The urbane aesthetic of the exterior continues inside the building at
Hinge Bureau, a coworking facility operated by the building owner. Bureau has both private offices and shared workspace, and shares an exercise room and green roof terrace with the apartment residents.
