Project Description

In 1947, Eero Saarinen won the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Competition to design The Gateway Arch. The 630 foot-tall structure, shaped like a catenary curve, is the centerpiece of a 62-acre site honoring the western expansion of the United States. The entire site, including The Gateway Arch structure and the surrounding landscape, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
