Project Description

June 17, 2015: The stadium is the host of several matches in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015, including two on Wednesday, June 17.

FROM THE ARCHITECTS:

As part of an overall effort to revive the historic
Lansdowne Park in Ottawa, the city sought a dynamic renovation to the park’s
famous stadium and arena. The resulting "Stadium in the Park" design
enhances the history and identity of Lansdowne Park and creates a powerful new
image for the city.  The venue breaks
away from the traditional notion of a stadium as an inert building and instead
takes a position that architecture is temporal and dynamic, event-based art in
which people and build form intersect. This is expressed with a public
space/park concourse that encircles the stadium and provides the public
opportunities to flow through the stadium structure while still in the park.
This creates an entirely new paradigm for how modern, urban stadiums are
designed and construction and reveals how stadiums can coexist with the natural
environment they inhabit.

Functionally, the renovated stadium provides
24,000 seats for sports and entertainment events and also allows for temporary
expansion to 45,000 seats for major national and international events. The
stadium’s unique roof structure is created by wooden frames organized in a
rhythmic way to create a visual icon. The venues design celebrates porosity,
accessibility and transparency while preserving stunning views of the Rideau
Canal. The public concourse areas where people can exist both in the park and
the stadium at the same time define the space.
