Project Description
FROM THE AIA INDIANA:
Located in Bargersville, Indiana, Taxman Brewing Company is an 8,675 square foot facility that houses a brewery and two-story restaurant. The owners wanted to create a building that would make a splash in the small town by creating a rustic, yet modern aesthetic to serve their Belgian-inspired beers.
Programmatic elements within the project include renovating an existing warehouse and constructing an addition to house the new brewery. The dynamic space evolved from exposing the existing beauty of the building. By sandblasting and exposing the concrete block, the naturally rough texture provides a rich backdrop to the dining areas on the first and second floor. Leaving the wood ceiling structure exposed provides a contrast to the exposed concrete block providing a warmth to the space.

EXTERIOR SPACE
Large window openings and glass overhead doors were added to the south side of the restaurant to bring in light and open up the building in the spring and summer. The patio helps to create a space that mimics the interior with a wood fence and corten steel fire pit.

INTERIOR SPACE
Refined materials are folded into the palette to provide contrast and relief to the un-finished textures of the existing building components. A resin counter top that mimics Carrera marble is used as the bar top. A white, matte finished subway tile is the back elevation of the bar and frames niches to store glassware. The bar and millwork were designed to relate to the rustic structure of the building. Salvaged barn wood clads each bar and custom tables of barn wood and steel are used throughout. A polished concrete floor is used on the first floor and the existing wood floor was refinished on the second floor.
A large section of the second floor was taken out to add a dramatic two story volume to the first floor dining area and provided an opportunity for a grand staircase to the second floor. Lighting was selected for its warmth and industrial feel. Bare Edison bulbs are used throughout to accentuate the rustic look while providing a warm glow throughout the restaurant.
