Project Description

di Domenico + Partners designed the new 33,000 SF, 3-story mixed-use building in the heart of Coney Island, considered the largest above ground subway station in the New York City Transit system. Topped by two-stories occupied by NYCT Police District #34 and Station Signal Maintainers Quarters, the ground floor arcade offers new retail stores and concessions to this quintessential New York City neighborhood. Inspired by its “Playland” context, the lively design suits its location at Surf and Stillwell Avenues, a block from the beach boardwalk. An existing terra-cotta parapet, recommended for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, was maintained from a previous structure on the site. dD+P provided architectural design and construction administration services, including coordination with the NYS Historic Preservation Office, New York Transit Museum, and MTA Arts for Transit program.
