Project Description
Client: This house was designed as a primary residence for a New York City dweller who plans to retire here.
Site: The richest experiences happen at the edges of environments (Images 2 and 3). This house is situated on a forest rock outcropping looking out to field, swamp and beyond providing intimate and long distance glimpses of the forest and its animals.
Movement: We created excitement with mundane means-a refreshing daily trip from garage to house, revealing a series of views (Image 6)-intimate garden, to the low ceilinged entry, to dramatic, framed interior and exterior vistas.
Architectural Language: The design celebrates simplicity, avoiding competition with the dramatic site. It references humble local agricultural sheds and their materials- Red Cedar, Fir and standing seam metal roofing. Feng Shui informed the location and use of spaces.
Color: Simple white interior uses punches of color (Image 5) to animate inside layers.
Size: High ceilings and long views create a comfortable small house.
