Project Description

MAD Architects announced their plans for Scali Milano during the Milan Design Week on April 8. Their project is part of a research proposal—Historical Future: Milan Reborn—to transform Milan’s unused railyards into a lively, social hub in an effort to connect Milan’s citizens to the greater metropolis and the natural environment. MAD intends for the project to allow the railyards to become interconnected micro-systems through five spatial concepts: “City of Connections, City of Green, City of Living, City of Culture, and City of Resources,” according to the press release.

The project encompasses more than 6 million square-feet of space and is situated in northwestern Milan. The size of the project will cater to Milan’s increasing population, need for affordable housing, and mass-transit infrastructure. The centerpiece of the site will be three villages of residential, commercial, and public development built around a freight warehouse. Adjacent to the Porta Garibaldi train station will be two, mixed-use towers on a shared plinth. In southwestern Milan, MAD architects will construct Scalo Porta Genova for events, performances, and markets to encourage social interaction.
