Project Description

Builder’s Choice and Custom Home Awards Finalist

A 1950’s ranch house was brought into the 21st century and integrated with the landscape. The project is a model for the sustainable reuse of the traditional suburban house.

A glass pavilion for living, cooking and dining activities was added to the original structure, and connects the house to new terraces, gardens, a swimming pool and outdoor living spaces. With glass on three sides, the openness of the new pavilion contrasts with the quiet, protective character of the original structure which is used for bedrooms, bathrooms, and a study.

The sustainability strategy included:
· reuse of the existing structure and much of the mature landscape.
· insulate and seal the envelope of the existing house including all new windows and
doors.
· minimize summer cooling with high performance glazing, deep overhangs, and
good sun screening.
· minimize winter heating with dark stone floors and a radiant heating system.
