Project Description

The Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Research Laboratories and School of Public Health (SPH) are designed to promote the cross fertilization of ideas. The new home for the SPH includes research space for the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ)Medical School, and the design took full advantage of the opportunities to promote interdepartmental synergies and the cross‐fertilization of ideas while realizing efficiencies through the sharing of core facilities and support space.

The 30,000 sf SPH is designed with a curvilinear shaped wing comprising classrooms, dry labs and offices. In a separate rectilinear wing, the RWJ Medical School is 90,000 S.F. of research space with 27 labs occupied by 16 principal investigators including the STEM Cell Institute of New Jersey. The facility also houses a 20,000 S.F. transgenic mice vivarium, an imaging suite and an NMR facility with an 800 MHz unit. The two wings are organized around an atrium which acts as the entry and provides the critical break‐out space where so much of the interdepartmental interaction occurs in today’s academic environment.

The new SPH, located on the University’s Piscataway Campus became a top priority and consolidated a number of departments and administrative functions that were scattered in multiple locations throughout Piscataway and New Brunswick.
