Project Description
The new 575 student Roger Wellington Public School in Belmont, Ma was co-created with a community focused on values of future-oriented education for children, future-oriented stewardship for the environment, and service to the greater neighborhood. The community and its architect sought a contemporary approach unbounded by pre-conceived notions of public schools. The building’s two schools within a school – grades PK-1 and 2-4 – are flooded with daylight and are further scaled with pavilion-like elements and wood cladding to reflect the neighborhood and the child. An innovative ‘Z’ plan provides two separate fronts and play courts for the different age groups.
