Project Description
The YMCA is located within the Arverne by-the-Sea development, a new 117 acre residential neighborhood adjacent to Far Rockaway Beach in Queens, NY. The Y features an 8,000 SF indoor family aquatics park, cardiovascular and strength training fitness areas, aerobics rooms, classrooms, a full size gymnasium, child care, a Little League field and parking. The center of these activities is a 2-story light-filled atrium with views into the pool hall and out to the terraces and garden. The atrium, which is located off the entry, contains a reception area, a lounge for members, and a feature wall that extends the length of the building. The feature wall is constructed of the same exterior fiber cement material as the building facades but in a variety of colors. The wall features donor plaques, artwork, display cases for trophies, and an open stair with a skylight above that provides access to the upper level cardiovascular workout areas. Designed to the level of a USGBC LEED Silver building, the YMCA has low flow plumbing fixtures, locally made interior and exterior materials with recycled content, cool roofs, and bicycle racks.
