Project Description

The first development of its kind within Redwood City’s Downtown Precise Plan area, this unique project embraces the goal of reviving the City’s heart by introducing a new housing solution for transitional neighborhoods at the edges of downtown.

Eighteen single-family detached, owner-occupied homes (at 34 du/ac) sit atop a concrete podium on a half-acre, with 10 of the units having direct access to a private garage below. Street front homes have raised porch entries that create a sense of separation, while engaging the activity of public sidewalks at the pedestrian-scale.

Homes internal to the site are oriented around a landscaped courtyard with parking garage access by staircase and elevator lobby. The courtyard is the social nucleus of the urban block and also provides neighborhood privacy and enclosure from the public realm.

The four-sided contemporary architectural design and aesthetics of these homes include clerestory penetrations that preserve sightlines and allow natural light and fresh air to flow into the individual home. Their L-shaped configurations frame private urban patios with uncovered volumes of space enjoyed by each multi-leveled home. Patios expand the floor plan creating an indoor/outdoor living area with access to/from the central courtyard to encourage the social aspects of courtyard living.
